Whether you are looking to get involved with the community or fulfill a childhood dream, if you have a desire to help folks when they need it the most; we may have an opportunity for you.
The New Glarus Fire Department is looking for dedicated individuals interested joining an organization that has been serving its community for over 100 years and is committed to providing protection to all that need it. Coming together from all walks of life from field service technicians, office workers, construction workers, business owners; we are here to help when called. Interested?
How does it all work?
Volunteer firefighting is not all that different from career firefighting. Both require the same training, a desire to help people, and responding to emergency situations at a moment’s notice. Though not a full-time job, volunteer firefighting does however require a certain level of commitment outside of your normal job. We meet every Monday at 7PM for business meeting, training, and equipment maintenance. We require you to become a WI State Certified Firefighter, (usually one night a week until certificated). We encourage any training above and beyond our requirements and will often pay for it depending on the course.
Once on the New Glarus Fire Department, we will provide you with Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE), we will pay for your Wisconsin State certified Firefighter training through either MATC or Blackhawk Tech. You will be provided a mentor to help get you familiar with the equipment, our procedures, and any other questions you may have. You will be issued a pager and are expected to respond to each call we have while you are in the village of New Glarus and available. If you work in the village and your employer will allow you to leave when paged, fantastic. We do not have many calls during normal working hours, but when we do, we are often short-handed. Being volunteer firefighter is a commitment. We can be called day or night, during a meal, tucking your kids into bed, or sound asleep for hours. But we respond because we are needed. Someone needs our help and there is something inside of us that says, “We are here, we will help.”
Is that voice inside of you?
If it is and you are ready please download and complete an application and drop it off down at the New Glarus Fire Station on a Monday night.
If you still need more information, we are available on Monday evenings down at the station usually as early as 6PM before we start at our meeting a 7PM. Come down, talk to our firefighters, and see what brings 36 people together to help protect a community.
The New Glarus Fire Dept., Climbing to New Heights
NGFD is proud to serve the community of New Glarus and surrounding rural areas. With the support of the community, we strive to continue to improve on our equipment and training to ensure the best possible results when we are called upon.
Always aiming to please, one of the things that we are well known for is our original ladder cart that we pull in local parades. As demonstrated by the picture above, we also put on a show by climbing the ladder while bracing the bottom with our firefighters. See us in action on our Video Page.
